NOT AWESOME

The latest film from George Miller Three Thousand years of Longing is a variation on a classic story (three stories, in fact) all based around the genie who will grant you three wishes… It stars Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton as the Djinn and Alithea; his newest challenge. Will we need a genie to wish us away from this review? Or maybe a huge bottle of Djinn afterwards? Either way, we have some very strong feelings on this new film.

Dion hasn’t seen the film, which may make him the lucky one in this review featuring Jill, Quinny and Peta all opening up a genie’s lamp-full of whup-ass on this messy, uneven production.

While attending a conference in Istanbul, Dr. Alithea Binnie happens to encounter a djinn who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. This presents two problems: first, she doubts that he’s real, and second, because she’s a scholar of story and mythology, she knows all the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong. The djinn pleads his case by telling her fantastical stories of his past. Eventually, she’s beguiled and makes a wish that surprises them both.

A narrative mess of a film on so many levels.
A gorgeously shot and interesting concept for a film that manages to undo all good-will it may have engendered by including terrible sexual politics, questionable plot lines and un-earned character beats.
