TPToA Podcast 364 – Sugar (Apple TV+)

If you like a good noir story set in Hollywood with a likeable lead, this is for you. It has something else entirely... but that would be telling.
Colin Farrell is the glue holding this Noir inflected mystery together. But the surprising secondary story will either make you love or hate it. It's genre shifting on a massive level and surprising as hell. But you'll need to love Noir mysteries to get to it.

Sugar

“A genre-bending contemporary take on the private detective story set in Los Angeles,” this week’s review follows John Sugar, a private investigator recruited by a wealthy movie producer to investigate the disappearance of his granddaughter. As simple as the premise sounds, in the world of John Sugar everything is definitely not what it seems.

The show is a smaller more intimate affair this week, with half the team either boarding or disembarking from planes as we record. So its Quinny and Peta playing the roles of Private Eye and the “dame wearing red”… in your heart of hearts, you know who is who.

Synopsis:

Academy Award nominee Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the beloved granddaughter of legendary Hollywood producer Jonathan Siegel. As Sugar tries to determine what happened to Olivia, he will also unearth Siegel family secrets; some very recent, others long-buried.
